Dimitar Cholakov was born on July 25, 1954 in Popovo, Bulgaria. In 1973 he graduated from Hight school of Fine Arts "Ilia Petrov" in Sofia, and in 1981 he graduated from the National Academy of Arts - Sofia in the class of Acad. Svetlin Rusev majoring in "Painting". From 1990 to 2013 he was the director of Hight school of Fine Arts "Nikola Marinov" in Targovishte. In 1999 he specialized in "Cite des Arts" - Paris. Dimitar Cholakov has over 50 solo exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad. He has participated in more than 100 international exhibitions and plein airs, some of which: Festival of Arts in Cannes-sur-Mer, France (1984), Autumn Salon in Paris (1990), plein air "Process - Space" (1986-1993), International Plein Air and Exhibition in Pulawy, Poland (2013), representative exhibitions "Contemporary Bulgarian Art" in Moscow, Rome, Caracas, Warsaw, Madrid and others cities. Winner of numerous awards, including: International Painting Award "Miketi", Italy (1988), Award at the exhibition "Man and the Sea", Varna (1992), the Grand Prize for Painting of "Allianz - Bulgaria" (2008), the Grand Ludogorie Painting Award - Razgrad (2013), BHG Petko Zadgorski Award in the exhibition "Watercolor 2020" named after Nenko Tokmakchiev, Burgas (2020) and others. Since 2006 he has been a professor of painting at the University of Sofia "Bishop Konstantin Preslavski". He lives and works in Targovishte and Shumen.
