From March 12, 2020 Largo Art Gallery will present with a solo exhibition of graphic art Hristo Kerin - one of the most beloved and awarded contemporary Bulgarian artists. Hristo graduated from the “Tsanko Lavrenov” School of Arts in Plovdiv, and in 1992 graduated with a degree in Graphics from the University of Veliko Turnovo. St. St. Cyril and Methodius" and connects his life forever with the old capital city. As early as 1993, Kerin joined the University's Graphics Department, first as an assistant and since 2005 as an associate professor of graphics. This exhibition is called "Mezzotint" and it is quite logical to include only works created with this particularly difficult to perform, but also very exciting graphic technique.
Mezotinot is an extremely difficult and demanding method for creating graphic works. Here, the artist starts work by using a special tool called a rocker to create a rough surface on the metal plate. If the plate allows to be printed in this state, the result will be a solid, black image. Each image or element of the work that the author will want to print in a lighter than that black tone is scraped by hand with a metal tool (scraper) and then begins to polish the plate with another device to produce gray and white tones in the already completed print. This process is extremely long, difficult and even sometimes (as artists work with bare hands) painful. Very often, artists that work in mezzotint print their artworks in color. Then a new plate is required for each color, the new color being printed on the previous print with a separate stroke of the printing press for each plate. Therefore, graphics created with this technique are often more expensive than those created with other graphic techniques and at the same time are extremely influential and of high artistic value.
In his current solo exhibition at Largo Art Gallery, Hristo Kerin will show artworks created with the mezzotint technique only. Some of them are larger graphics, and part of the much sought after and ordered exlibris made in the small format up to 20 by 20 centimeters. One of the main themes, developed in the work of the artist from Tarnovo, is the female beauty and the female nature and this is what is mainly presented in this exhibition. Starting with ancient mythology and stories about Leda and the Swan, the Thracian Queen, the goddess of beauty and her dreams, we will go through the author's flirtation with the theme of music, again transformed through female beauty in the graphics of "Just Jazz", "Music" , "First spring". Practically throughout the exhibition, with the exception of one work, we will see female portraits embodying the diverse female nature, depicting different emotional states of the woman.
You can read more about Hristo in the section “Artists” on the website.
The opening of the exhibition will be held on 12th of March and it will take place as a vernissage. The artist will be expecting you during the whole day between 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM in Largo Art Gallery, Varna, 8th Han Krum str. The exhibition runs until the 31st of March.
